The new study indicates that saffron, usually used to colour and flavour curries and Mediterranean dishes, can prove to be an efficient weapon in the fight against one of the commonest causes of sight failure, age-related macular degeneration (AMD).The first trial of saffron on human vision shows it extensively enhanced eyesight reports said.Lead researcher Professor Silvia Bisti said, “When patients were tested with usual eye charts, a number could read one or two lines smaller than before. Others said they can read newspapers in addition to books again.”
Bisti hailed the outcome as ‘remarkable’ and claimed saffron “may hold the key to preventing sight failure in the aged”.
